Let’s Play Sonic the Hedgehog: Revisiting Spring Yard Zone

Sonic-the-Hedgehog-Spring-Yard-Zone

The third zone in Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis is a light-hearted, zany environment that at some points resembles a pinball machine with springs, bumpers and secret areas. The inspiration for future casino levels found in most Sonic games came from Spring Yard Zone’s showy style.

Spring Yard Zone, which was the first level in the game to be drawn and finalized, boasts an expansive play area shifting between vertical and horizontal gameplay. The level is much more open than the compact confines of Marble Zone.

This was always one of my favorite levels to play through in any of the Sonic games. The level design is inspired, the music playful, and the overall presentation unique compared to all of the other zones.
