The Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain launch trailer is out now and it’s an ode to the Metal Gear franchise. We see clips from Metal Gear Solid games dating back to the original PlayStation game that kicked the series off in its current 3D form (Metal Gear dates back to 1987 on the MSX2). Just try watching appearances from Meryl, Psycho Mantis, and Metal Gear Rex without getting nostalgic.
In many ways, it feels like Hideo Kojima’s goodbye to the series that has defined his legacy as a game developer. All of the drama between Konami and Kojima aside, Metal Gear Solid V looks to be a defining game in their long relationship.
