This is my first round of the Sam and Max adventures and I have to admit, I’m impressed. Even though the game looks like it is for kids, there is some very adult humor in here. There are lots of pun jokes that are played on our fearless leader, George W. The gamplay is what you would expect with a point and click adventure. You point…. and click. You talk to neighbors, the evil Secret Service agents, all the while uncovering clues about what’s wrong with the president.
The best part of this game is the comedic writing of Sam and Max. They interact like a very violent married couple. With scenes all over their office of skeletons in closets and outlines of rabbits with a hole through its head. Luckily, there is a descent amount of fairly difficult puzzles. Unfortunately, the puzzles are hindered by the shortness of the game. You can expect to use an item shortly after getting it. And they give you a gun, but you can’t shoot little Max when he gets annoying, although Sam will punch him from time to time.
The game has a nice array of jazzy tunes to escort Sam and Max to all their locations. The presidential theme follows them all around the White House. It gives a nice detective feel to it. Since this franchise is heading in a more episodic direction, it’s not that long of a game. But the overall feel of the game is worth the nominal price. It is like watching your favorite sitcom, but you’re playing it. But be warned, you may need to take a break, that little bunny’s voice can be annoying!
