TimeSplitters 2 is more than just another first person shooter. It has a visual style all its own and a huge number of gameplay options that will keep you playing, and thinking for hours and hours. This is almost like the next Halo. Almost, but not quite that good.
Although its graphics engine clearly doesn't dive into the deep end of the Xbox and PS2 GPU, Timesplitters has it own distinct visual style that doesn't really need it to.The GCN version pushes the limits of its capabilities however. The character models, which fall somewhere between comic-book-ish and realistic, look great thanks to some basic texture work that is embellished by slick shading and lighting. Although the varied environments are simplistic, there are a few standout visual moments like snow that hits the screen and then melts, a terrific rain effect, and even the textures that retain detail up close. It's nice, but expected nowadays.
The composers of the music do a great job of creating a fitting ambience that goes along extremely well with the environments in which you play in. The guns sound a little weird and a little on the N64 style seen in Goldeneye. This makes it seem as if the makers wanted to make the game seem as if it was Goldeneye and in most cases, it is.
There are too many FPS out there that feel the same way that TS2 does. The game however stands out with one feature that makes it stand out from the rest of them. The mapmaker system.
It is surprising how well everything works given the number of options here. The in game mechanics work very well and the mapmaker system is and fun to use and make you own environment. There is a great multiplayer mode that just tips the peak of Goldeneye. You can play against bots or your friends or a combination of the two of them. Whatever was done with the multiplayer, people should follow.
On top of getting sucked into the fast and furious gameplay, everybody know that most of your time will be spent messing around with the map maker program. There are tons and tons of features and options. However, story mode is a little bit too short. Everything plays out though with the addition of the map maker which will keep you designing your own world for months to come.
