Not so long ago, Marvel Ultimate Alliance was released putting a new spin on the Marvel Universe. Bringing together all the Marvel characters in what turned out to be a decent game at the time. Spider-Man Friend or Foe seemingly tries to mimic the success of that game, bringing Spider-Man and all his foes together under the same banner to save the world, only they do a miserable job. It seems as though Activision was only trying to cash in on the license by brining another Spider-Man game to market. This makes Spider-Man 3 look like a Game of the Year candidate.
The opening cutscene of Friend or Foe looks average when compared to many next-gen title. After this however, things just all go downhill. Spider-Man looks like something from the original Xbox launch, not a next-gen game in any way. You are given such basic environments that had little thought really put into them at all. There is not really any place to roam around at all. Character models look like bad cartoon rip offs. What makes this worse is that the animation really are not that great either. For what little we are given as far as attacks really make this unacceptable.
Friend or Foe's gameplay is so simplistic that you will find yourself just button mashing your way through without much resistance at all. Each character has a unique attack which adds a slim amount of variety to Friend or Foe, but all the characters still play almost the same way. You will be fighting a lot of clones with mindless AI that basically just throw themselves at you. Boss battles are not very intuitive either. The only challenge you will face playing Friend or Foe is trying to play it until the end because it is that bad.
Seeing the variety of characters in Friend or Foe all under one banner is nice, but really offers no real variety between any of them. Playing through with the same few characters is not very difficult at all. The battle arena is average at best, bringing the button mashing to head to head gameplay. I find it very difficult for telling anyone to rent Friend or Foe, let alone purchase. Such a blatant rip off of Marvel Ultimate Alliance does not even deserve a spot on your shelf.
