Backyard Basketball

Developer: Atari Publisher: Atari
Release Date: September 25, 2007 Also On: None

Atari has been making sports games involving kids for years now. The Backyard series is one of the longer-running sports franchises out there. Now the series has finally come to the DS in the form of Backyard Basketball. Is this entry in the series a slam-dunk or an airball? Read on to find out.

Graphically, Backyard Basketball on the DS follows the same graphical style as its console brethren of the GCN generation, and it looks very similar to the console ones. The console ones were never games to break the graphics engines of their systems, and neither are the graphics in this game, but they look very nice and animate fairly well. They convey much to the feel of the game, which is the most that can be asked. Overall, the graphics are pretty good.

The sound is pretty standard fare for a Backyard game. Since it is a DS game, the commentary is not present, but all of the other sound you would expect from a Backyard game is present and accounted for. To sum it up, I have no major complaints about the sound either, although it does seem to be pretty standard and generic fare with nothing new or different.

In terms of gameplay, this game is pretty much the same as what you have been used to for years. You pick a team of kids and play a game of 3 on 3 basketball. All of the necessary mechanics of other Backyard Basketball games are here, and there is a system of power-up items that can be earned and used as well, which is something I do not think I personally have ever seen before in a Backyard game.

Regarding play modes, you can play a single game either with going through all of the trouble of picking teams or without it, whichever you choose. You can also play through a season of games if you would like to, and the game has DS multi-card play so you can play against another human opponent. Although online play might have been nice, it would hardly be necessary or expected for a game like this.

The replay value of this game would depend on how much you like basketball. There are only two other basketball games on the DS that I am aware of, and neither of them take themselves any more seriously than this one, so even the serious fan of basketball who wants a basketball game for the DS might come away preferring this game given the options at their disposal. Still, this game is by no means a basketball sim and should not be assumed to be such. It is just another pretty good entry in the Backyard Sports series, nothing more, but nothing less.
