It is fairly common practice for companies to clone a game concept when it proves to be popular. After all, consider how many Space Invaders and Pac-man clones graced the Atari 2600. In the past few years, the Katamari Damacy series has been reasonably popular, and so it is no surprise to me that Koei has come out with a game that is a fairly obvious attempt to duplicate the magic of that series. Does it do so successfully, though? Read on to find out.

Graphically, the game is pretty good, but it is not anything that is going to max out the DS's capabilities. The monsters look decent, and the objects that they eat look about as realistic as can reasonably be expected. The game is graphically simple, however, with many duplicated object designs and less than impreessive animations, but overall, the game does what it needs to do in this regard.

On the sound front, the sound effects are not bad by any means, but they could probably have been done better. As with most DS games, there is no voice acting either. The music is okay. It is nothing that is going to distract you from the game, which is a good thing, but it is not anything that you are going to become addicted to either. Overall, the sound is good, but not great.

The gameplay is reasonably simple. There are four monsters in the arena, and the objective is to score more points than your opponents by eating objects. At the beginning of the game, it really is that simple, although you also have the ability to attack your opponents if you need to. As you progress farther into the single-player mode, added functionalities such as making yourself bigger to eat bigger objects or licking objects that have elemental protection will make the game deeper. These things are introduced gradually though, thus giving you more time to adapt to the additions. At the end of the day, though, the game never becomes too complex.

If you don't want to play against the computer, though, you can play the game over multiplayer, either with the use of a local DS wireless connection or over the internet. This adds some potential replay value to the game, but this doesn't seem like the type of game that is going to last too long anyway. Still, if you are a fan of Katamari Damacy, this game might be worth looking into.
