X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Developer: Raven Software Publisher: Activision
Release Date: May 1, 2009 Available On: PS3 & Xbox 360

Raven Software was tasked with recreating the movie experience of the latest X-Men movie known as X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While the movie was far from being a blockbuster, the video game actually manages to outshine its lackluster big screen counterpart. Following the same basic premise, you play as Wolverine with his indestructible adamantium claws on a revenge mission to destroy his enemies.

The game plays a lot like God of War. The action is fast-paced and does not require a whole lot of finesse. Unlike the PG-13 movie, this game is M rated and deservedly. There is no lack of blood, guts and slashing of body parts in this game. All for the better as it makes the action more exciting, a true action-brawler type game. True to form, Wolverine has a number of close and long range attacks that can be combined into deadly combos.

There are a number of different cinematic elements in the game that add to the “wow” factor. For instance, you will get the opportunity to skydive from 30,000 feet, dodge spinning helicopter blades and slice your foes in half. I would stop short of calling the actual graphics anything groundbreaking, but there definitely are moments that leave you impressed just out of the intense situation and not so much the visual beauty. In fact, there are parts of the game that totally disappoint visually, especially the explosions.

Fans of Wolverine (and of the underwhelming movie) are going to love this game. The visceral action gets your adrenaline flowing in ways that no past games in the X-Men franchise have been able to replicate. Let me just say that anyone that remembers X2: Wolverine's Revenge, you can breath a sigh of relief that this game is handled by a different studio.

Whether or not you care for the X-Men franchise or Wolverine as a character, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a fun game to play. It has a liberal amount of action, brutal killing, and a competent game engine. While it plays a lot like God of War, this is not the next God of War. It will not go down as Game of the Year material, nor will it go down as another lackluster movie-to-game attempt. It's a solid rental that is worthy of your consideration.
