Have you ever solved a murder mystery by completing sudoku puzzles? No? Then you haven't played Sudoku Ball Detective. The premise sounds silly enough – and it certainly is. Yet does Sudoku Ball Detective at least promise a fun experience for fans of the popular puzzle game? Read on to find out.
The story, so much as one exists, is played out through poorly drawn stills frame by frame. The dialogue is all text as well with music that is more annoying than anything (I turned off the sound after a few minutes). Your goal as an ex-Scotland Yard detective is to solve a murder at an estate by interrogating people, looking for clues and doing other detective work.
There might have been some potential with this sort of framework, but alas, the developers decided to force you to do everything through solving sudoku puzzles. I guess that someone needs to tell the NYPD that they need more sudoku books if they want to solve their cold case files. Anyway, as illogical as that may sound, that is how the game plays.
The actual sudoku part of the game is not that bad. As the title says, you play on a sudoku ball, which basically is six different sudoku puzzles spanning a ball shaped object. You have to complete all six sides of the ball in order to move on to the next puzzle. The ball is a 3D object that you can move around using the stylus and pressing on squares to write in the number that you want to fill in.
There really is not much to say about Sudoku Ball Detective other than that you should avoid it. The story mode is complete nonsense and should have been scrapped in the early stages of development. The actual sudoku puzzles are fine, but the sole stand out feature (the detective aspect) is garbage. In total there are 240 sudoku puzzles to solve, which you could probably find as many if not more in a book at the dollar store.
