Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick

Developer: Vis Publisher: THQ
Release Date: June 16, 2003 Also On: PS2 & Xbox

The Evil Dead movies are by no means high art. In fact, they are squarely in the realm of B-movie land, but thanks to the wonderful comedic talents of actor Bruce Campbell, they are classic B-movies. Unfortunately, the Evil Dead games have not been so lucky. While Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick is a lot better than its predecessor on the Dreamcast, the game is not nearly as good as it could have been. The series has simply gone from painful to poor.

Evil Dead has some horrifying parts alright, terrible graphics. With bland, repetitive visuals not even up to Dreamcast standards, it looks just as low budget as the films. Little errors such as collision detection are present and the affect: a game that controls poorly. To put it simply, PlayStation has better graphics than this.

Sound is probably Evil Dead's best quality. Bruce Campbell is the voice of the character and narrates the game brilliantly. Gun sounds are ok, but not great. There are no other major sounds that take notice in the game. The music is bad and the environment sounds are even worse, which is not what you would expect in a modern day game.

Evil Dead and its craptacular control is nothing that helps the game at all. It doesn't help that the camera angles can be extremely frustrating. There is an original story that kind of helps the game out a little bit, but nothing many people will take interest in. With no multiplayer and gameplay that won't horrify you because it is simply horrifying, but because it just looks so damn bad. Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick doesn't even deserve to be even looked at nor thought about. It may be one of the worst games available in the next-generation market today.
