Overcoming powerful foes in a big arena is such a thrilling experience in a video game. A good game combines a great music score, sound/graphical effects, and action sequences to create a compelling and memorable fight. Here are the 10 best video game boss fights.
The list is ranked in no particular order. We are also limiting the scope to games released in the past fifteen years.
Grigori – Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen
This fight was what the Arisen, You, were preparing for from the start of Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. This large-scale battle takes place in multiple locations, not just one arena. It’s safe to say that this spectacle of a boss fight is the greatest Dragon fight ever in a video game.
General Radahn, Scourge of the Stars – Elden Ring
General Radahn, son of Lord Radagon and Queen Rennala, the Immensely powerful warrior who conquered the literal stars is an absolute beast. He is also one of the most tragic characters in the game. Despite his fiendish, monstrous appearance, it’s implied in the Lore that he was quite the respectful and loving General to his army, and also his horse, Leonard.
You get to summon eight warriors to join you in order to try to defeat the General. One YouTube comment once said that “This wasn’t a Boss Fight, This was a war” and I couldn’t have said it better.

Akira Nishikiyama – Yakuza Kiwami
Arguably the best boss fight in the Yakuza games, this is also one of the saddest fights in the franchise; especially if you played Yakuza 0 previously. I’d like to refrain from saying much about this fight, as it would spoil one of the greatest video game stories ever told.
The music track that plays during this fight is also quite sad, but badass, at the same time. Give it a listen if you’d like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Hl6KNY10ZA&t=73s
Here are some other boss great fights from the Yakuza series:
Ryuji Goda – Yakuza Kiwami 2
Keiji Shibusawa – Yakuza 0
Daisaku Kuze – Yakuza 0
Goro Majima – Yakuza 5
Kiryu Kazuma – Yakuza 7
Jetstream Sam – Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Okay, so Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was widely criticized, but there is a memorable boss fight. One of the late game fights, this spectacle of a fight takes place in the middle of a desert. It feels like a duel from a Samurai movie. The music track gets your blood pumping, like most other tracks from the game.
Senator Armstrong is another great fight from MGR.
Mr. Freeze – Batman: Arkham City
A stealth boss fight. Enough said.
Knight Artorias – Dark Souls
Knight Artorias was one of the most renowned and skilled knights from the Dark Souls universe. He became corrupted by venturing into the Abyss, and you get to end his suffering.
He’s quite weakened when you encounter him, but this doesn’t keep him from absolutely wrecking gamers with his lightning-fast Greatsword attacks. I can just imagine how much of a monster he must’ve been in his prime. The sombre music track that plays during the fight is also brilliant.
Isshin, the Sword Saint – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
This epic final boss fight of Sekiro is considered by many to be the most difficult video game boss fight, for good reason. Isshin Ashina is an incredibly strong and disciplined Samurai. You’ll need to be focused and patient in order to stand a chance against him.
Great Shinobi, Owl is also a great fight from Sekiro.
Olgierd von Everec – The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone
While the Witcher 3 isn’t known for its combat system, there are some intense and fun battles throughout the game. The fight between the Witcher and Olgierd von Everec is one such battle. The fight takes place in front of a burning manor, with rain pouring down.
Olgierd’s fast and spectacular combos are a sight to behold.
Caranthir – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Here’s an entry from the Witcher 3 base game.
Caranthir is one of the most powerful members of the Wild Hunt and Geralt will encounter him in the final battle. Caranthir is an extremely powerful and dangerous battlemage, who is quite a silent character. One can say that he’s the pinnacle of the “Strong and silent type”.
Baldur – God of War
The first and final boss fights in God of War (2018) are both against the same character: Baldur. He’s incredibly powerful in the last fight, and it’s so memorable because of the quotes and lines he makes in the middle of the fight.
