#16 The Wii Philosophy – Captured in one word, the Wii’s philosophy is “change”. Nintendo is not content with the status quo anymore, because they can’t afford to be. Since the release of the NES, they have steadily lost console market share generation after generation. The GameCube put Nintendo on the brink of collapse as a console maker and left many wondering if the company would go the way of Sega. In short, they needed to do something radical, something revolutionary to shake things up.
It’s not just the Wiimote and emphasis on gameplay over graphics that has us amazed, it’s Nintendo’s advocacy for changing direction in the game industry. Nintendo DS was just an experiment that proved that creating games outside of the box can reap huge rewards. Nintendo DS changed the way we play portable games. The Wii has the potential to do the same in the living room. PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are the systems of “more of the same”, offering traditional games with better graphics. Nintendo is giving gamers an opportunity to change the way we play games forever.
