Acedior Review

Developer: Fade Team Publisher: Fade Team
Release Date: July 23, 2004 Also On: None

Acedior was thought to be lost. The source code of the game no longer exists and it was an irony of fate that the copy protection prevented Fade Team from continuing to sell their game. Thankfully, a hacker came to their (and our) rescue and now you can buy the game again. Acedior is available in optimized versions for Zodiac and other Palm devices and it is available in English, German and French.

Acedior is a classic adventure game. One of those games where you do not have to choose but find out what to do. It has the typical overcomplicated controls (use x with y), beautiful, yet unanimated graphics and the always present danger that you get stuck plus the added fun of sudden deaths without much of a warning. There is a reason why the adventure genre is almost extinct. However, there is also a reason why the adventures were once a great genre. They feature challenging riddles, great stories and beautiful places to visit. Do the shortcomings win over the good points? Or is this an adventure worth playing?

I usually do not like adventures much. They are often pretty boring and playing them takes too much effort with too little reward. I loved playing Acedior and just could not stop playing. How does that fit together? Maybe it is the fact that I can control it with the touch-screen and do not have to move a heavy mouse around or try to hit things with an analog stick. Maybe it is the fact that I can play it in my bed and do not have to sit down in front of a PC or TV. The good story and the beautiful graphics also play a role.

Acedior is a great adventure that I enjoyed very much. There are also a few shortcomings. The game only takes a few hours and there is no music and almost no sound effects. Maybe the story was this short because I never really got stuck which is a rare thing in adventure games. The riddles were good but always logical and never too difficult. Even if a solution seems obvious, you should try all things possible or you will miss a lot of the humor in the game. Especially a certain movie reference made me chuckle but I won’t spoil it for you. If you like adventures, this is the game you have been waiting for. If you do not like adventures, you might want to give it a try anyway because it is a really good game.
