Akira is getting a limited edition 4K Blu-ray remaster

The classic anime Akira is getting revived. The new 4K remaster with support for HDR is coming, but right now it’s only planned for Japan.

Originally released in 1988, the classic anime depicts life in a dystopian cyberpunk future. Set in 2019, civilization is beset with corruption and on the brink of total collapse. How prescient!

Unfortunately, you cannot play this on a regular Blu-ray player. You need a 4K Ultra HD player. And if you want to enjoy the high dynamic range featured in this remaster, you’ll need a 4K television with HDR support. It can be played in non-HDR 4K TVs, but it won’t look as good.

Akira 4K Remastered is set to launch on April 24. The limited edition package includes a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, bonus Blu-ray disc, booklet, and special sleeve packaging. According to the product page, it has English language options. Even if you live in the US or Europe, you can still buy it at Play-Asia.

Meanwhile, if you’re fine with a standard Blu-ray + DVD combo, Amazon has it for $15. However, that version is not the 4K remaster. But at least you’ll have one of the best anime ever made.
