Activision announced on Thursday that Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the biggest launch in history across all forms of entertainment. The company has estimated that sell-through sales of $310 million took place in North America and the United Kingdom alone in the first 24 hours. Modern Warfare 2 was released on Tuesday, November 10th with midnight launches taking place at over 10,000 stores in the U.S. alone. In its first day, Modern Warfare 2 sold approximately 4.7 million copies in North America and the United Kingdom.

“The Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium,” said Mike Griffith, CEO, Activision. “The shattering of these entertainment records is a testament to the compelling, cinematic and uniquely engaging experience that the Call of Duty brand delivers. Modern Warfare 2 has taken interactive experience to unprecedented heights setting a new standard for entertainment.”

The last release of this magnitude was over two years ago. Halo 3, which sold $170 million in 24 hours and $300 million in its first week, had unit sales of approximately 3 million. While Modern Warfare 2 handily outperformed Halo 3’s launch, that title was a Xbox 360 exclusive whereas Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is being released across PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
