Capcom says four out of five game sales are now digital

Capcom is now heavily reliant on digitally-distributed games, the publisher said during a meeting with shareholders. They hope to expand digital sales even more.

The company’s digitally-distributed games accounted for just 53 percent of sales last year. This year, however, the number has ballooned to around 80 percent – and it is still on an upward trajectory.

“While it ultimately depends on how our customers behave going forward, for the time being, we are promoting our digital strategy with an objective of 90%, since there are some customers who prefer to own discs,” the company said, according to our friends at GamesIndustry.biz.

“We aim to continue expanding our business performance by maximizing the benefits of digital sales, which include being able to provide our content both for longer periods of time and throughout the world,” the company added.

My Take

Digital distribution has clearly grown leaps and bounds in recent years. Still, it is a tad surprising that a major publisher like Capcom is this reliant on digital sales. Four out of five games sold is a lot. That being said, the company has pushed digital distribution hard for games like Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. And it has followed up with loads of free DLC.
