Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate Officially Confirmed For 3DS

The previously-rumored Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and Mirror of Fate games for the Nintendo 3DS turned out to be the same thing: Konami finally confirmed today that the latest handheld installment will take on both subtitles, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate will appear on the cover of next month’s Nintendo Power magazine. GoNintendo confirms that the character appearing on the cover art is a new protagonist named Trever Belmont. Additionally, some low-quality scans of in-game footage reveal that the gameplay will be the “3D action/adventure” variety rather than the 2D side-scrolling that we’ve seen in previous handheld games. So, the additional rumors about 3D gameplay are essentially confirmed as well.

Castlevania LOS MOF - 1

In fact, the GoNintendo article details quite a few aspects of the game:

– deep combat mechanics

– involves Trevor Belmont

– Fight with Trevor’s version of the Combat Cross

– strong attacks with X

– wider-reaching attacks with Y

– secondary weapons like the boomerang-like glaive and electric bomb

– use these with A

– grab enemies with R

– block and dodge with L

– involves light and shadow magic returns

– earn experience points to unlock new combos

– these include launching foes into the air, smashing enemies down to the ground and more

– includes skeletons, axe-wielding undead and more

Castlevania LOS MOF - 2

Any thoughts? Personally, as a fan of both the handheld Castlevania titles and the recent Lords of Shadow for PS3, this is big news for me. I’ve been waiting for a new Castlevania for the 3DS since the console launched, and it really seems that Konami is making the push to move the series into 3D, straying further from the 2D roots for the first time ever on a handheld. Most of the mechanics seem to be taken directly from Lords of Shadow, and you can see from the screenshots that the in-game graphics are designed similarly as well.
