A lot of third parties made games during the Atari 2600 era, and a lot of those games were direct or indirect clones of other games. Commando Raid, by U.S. Games, is no exception, as it is obviously influenced by Missile Command. But does the clone live up to the quality of the game it is a clone of? Read on to find out.

The concept behind Commando Raid is a little different than Missile Command. There are only four cities, each of which can take three hits instead of one. Instead of it being missiles falling from the sky that you are shooting down, there are paratroopers that are dropped from airplanes, with the occasional bomb that causes you to automatically lose if it hits the ground thrown in for good measure.

However, the main difference is this: instead of aiming by moving a cursor over the spot you wish to fire at and then hitting the fire button, you use left and right on the joystick to move the gun left or right so you have to be able to visualize angles to do much in this game. This makes this game much more challenging than Missile Command. Depending on what skill level you’re playing on, the game ranges from not too hard to virtually impossible.

Aesthetically, there is not that much to speak of. The sound effects are pretty typical fare for an Atari 2600 game circa 1982. They is not anything bad, but they are not the greatest to be found on the system either. Compared to Missile Command, there is a lot more going on graphically, however, so this game is obviously graphically superior to the game it is trying to emulate.

The sheer quantity of skill levels and other options that can be altered in this game make it a game that has the potential to last a very long time once you have learned how to aim the gun. Among the options you can change is whether the gun is autofiring or fires only when you press the button and the game mode you choose also affects how many paratroopers get dropped by each airplane. The game only has a single-player mode, but that is no big deal. If you are a fan of Missile Command, there is no logical reason why you should not at least give this game a try if you can find a copy of it.
