Control Ultimate Edition offers free next-gen upgrade to PS5 and Xbox Series X

Control

Remedy is offering a free next-gen upgrade for Control from PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series X. But there’s a catch…

If you already own the game (that is to say, if you supported the game when it first came out), you don’t qualify for the offer. The upgrade is only available for those who buy the Ultimate Edition, which comes out on September 10 for consoles.

“We will offer a free next-gen digital upgrade for those who buy Control Ultimate Edition on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One,” Remedy says on the game’s website. They add that “the free upgrade path to [the] Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 version of Control is only available” with the Ultimate Edition.

My Take

To be sure, Control Ultimate Edition is going to be a pretty nice package. You get the base game and the two expansions (The Foundation and AWE). But locking out gamers who supported the game early on makes zero sense to me. Why should anyone need to pay for the game twice? Anyway, maybe the company will change its mind after hearing from fans? We’ll see.
