Despite the Game Boy’s hardware limitations, studio IZMA hopes to present a horror experience that will surprise many.
Deadeus, a horror game for the classic Nintendo Game Boy handheld, is currently available for pre-order on the Incube8 shop, according to Incube8 Games and indie developer IZMA.
A new game for retro hardware
While many people may be unaware of the retro gaming movement in 2021, it is important to note that a lot of creators are not only banking on the remastering of old games but are also producing new titles for platforms like the Game Boy, GBA, Dreamcast, and others. We’ve reported on quite a few of them including Gelatinous: Humanity Lost, Genesis, Elland: The Crystal Wars, and Infinity.
Incube8 Games is one of the few publishers collaborating with tiny developers working on fresh vintage console ideas. This time they’ve collaborated with IZMA to bring a fresh edition of Spacebot Interactive’s original game, Deadeus, to the market. Deadeus is a vintage game with a fantastic concept that, despite the Game Boy’s graphical limitations, manages to capture and express horror.
A prophetic child
Deadeus was created with Chris Maltby’s GB Studio engine and has music by Stuart Busby. The game revolves around a tiny child who has a prophetic nightmare in which he is told that everyone in his town will die in three days and that he must examine his hamlet to see if he can rescue them at all.
Unlike the games introduced in the heyday of the Game Boy, Deadeus has 11 endings and no direct path. The developers leave it up to the player to decide which is the best course of action.
Deadeus is without a doubt one of the best games developed for Game Boy that we have seen in recent years, not only for having a great story but for transmitting the essence that the games of this retro handheld had in its day while presenting gameplay adapted to the needs of today’s players.
If you are interested in Deadeus, you can pre-order the game from the Incube8 store. It is coming in both a standard and collector’s edition that is limited to just 250 copies. Both versions are compatible with Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. It is expected to launch in February 2022.
