Dragon Quest: Your Story is coming to Netflix

Dragon Quest: Your Story

The 3D computer-animated film Dragon Quest: Your Story is coming to Netflix in the US on February 13.

The film was released last year in Japan. It bombed, managing to rake in box office sales of $11.1 million on a budget of $18.5 million (converted to American dollars). It’s somewhat surprising that it is getting released in the US, although the studio is likely just trying to recoup its losses at this point.

The film is an adaptation of the 1992 Super Famicom role-playing game Dragon Quest V, which was not originally released outside of Japan. The game was first brought to the US as a Nintendo DS remake in 2009. It was later released on Android and iOS devices.

Some have criticized the film for using big-name Japanese actors to do voice-acting. It is written and co-directed by Takashi Yamazaki. Ryuichi Yagi and Makoto Hanafusa also serve as co-directors. The film runs 1 hour and 42 minutes.

Netflix has only released a brief plot summary. “Luca follows in his father’s footsteps to rescue his mother from evil Ladja. Finding the heavenly hero who wields the Zenithian sword is his only hope,” the summary reads.

The company has yet to confirm whether the movie will be dubbed or just have English subtitles. The only trailers released so far are in Japanese.
