DS and Wii Top July 2008 Hardware Sales, NCAA Tops Software

Hardware sales continue to be strong for Nintendo deep into the summer as NPD released their July 2008 sales data. The traditionally slow summer period saw sales of over 600,000 for Nintendo DS and 500,000 for the Wii. Among its competitors, Sony continued its rise with PS3 as the system outsold Xbox 360 for the second straight month. In fact, PS2 is the only system that did not outperform the Xbox 360 in July.

1. Nintendo DS – 608,400
2. Wii – 555,000
3. PlayStation 3 – 224,900
4. PlayStation Portable – 221,700
5. Xbox 360 – 204,800
6. PlayStation 2 – 155,500

On the software side it was a quite month. This is to be expected after the unusually busy months of April, May and June with the releases of Grand Theft Auto IV, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit and Metal Gear Solid IV. NCAA Football 09 took the top spot, followed closely by Wii Fit. Guitar Hero: On Tour for the DS had a second strong month after its debut in June, while Soul Calibur IV appeared twice at #6 and #9 on Xbox 360 and PS3, respectively. It’s worth noting that Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid IV are no where to be seen this month while Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii remain on the charts.

1. NCAA Football 09 (Xbox 360) – 397,600
2. Wii Fit (Wii) – 369,600
3. Guitar Hero: On Tour (DS) – 309,700
4. Wii Play (Wii) – 284,000
5. NCAA Football 09 (PS3) – 242,500
6. Soul Calibur IV (Xbox 360) – 218,900
7. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) – 174,500
8. Rock Band (Wii) – 165,800
9. Soul Calibur IV (PS3) – 155,800
