Nintendo attaches a subtitle to Paper Mario for the 3DS, still hoping for a holiday 2012 release.

There wasn’t a lot of discussion about the upcoming installment of Paper Mario for the Nintendo 3DS during The Big N’s E3 presser earlier this week, but there were a few details – and a trailer (posted below) – revealed for the forthcoming Mario-themed RPG.

First, the former title “Paper Mario 3DS” has officially been subtitled; the game is now known as “Paper Mario: Sticker Star”. The title comes from the stickers that serve as a primary component in the game design; throughout Sticker Star, Mario will come across various stickers that can be used for special abilities – some during combat, some in the field, but each with a unique function.

Like New Super Mario Bros. 2, Nintendo plans to release Paper Mario: Sticker Star simultaneously in both retail and digital formats. Though there is still no solid release date, The Big N seems to be sticking to the original target – “holiday 2012”.

For those keeping count, there are potentially three Mario games (and one Luigi game) scheduled for launch in the second half of 2012. Needless to say, the Nintendo faithful had better be prepared for all of them.

Also like NSMB2, it is too bad that Nintendo has been so tight on revealing any of the key gameplay features – we know that the 3D effects, combined with the flat paper-style visuals, will be used in a number of impressive ways, but not much else is clear at this point. Will there be any sort of item-trading or connectivity between players via StreetPass? Will there be SpotPass support, or any kind of online capabilities?

Let us know what you think about Paper Mario: Sticker Star in the comments section, and stay tuned for more information about the game as the “holiday 2012” release window starts to close.
