Elite Dangerous update adds tutorial, real-money virtual currency system

The latest Elite Dangerous update is adding a tutorial for newcomers and a real-money currency system.

The September update aims to bring in inexperienced players with what the developers are calling a “Starter Experience.” The update adds a fully-voiced introduction to teach recruits the basics of flight, navigation, combat, and more.

More seasoned players will be interested in the new ARX virtual currency. The virtual currency can be earned in-game or purchased with real-world money to buy extras like paint jobs and ship kits.

The developers have also updated the game’s Livery System. The UI has been revamped for applying cosmetic items and extras to ships.

You will now be able to access your ship livery from the main menu. Even if your ship is not docked at a starport, you will be able to change up the ship’s appearance on the fly.

Elite Dangerous will go offline for maintenance today as the update is rolled out. The game’s official Twitter account will confirm when the servers are back up.
