Epic Games acquires company behind God of War’s facial animation tech

Epic Games

Epic Games has acquired Cubic Motion. It’s just the latest in a string of purchases.

According to Gamesindustry.biz, Epic Games has acquired 3Lateral, Agog Labs, Psyonix, Twinmotion, Houseparty, and Quixel. This is at least Epic’s seventh acquisition since the start of 2019.

Cubic Motion develops facial animation technology. It has been used in notable big-name games this generation. For instance, the award-winning God of War and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice both used the technology.

“Facial animation that conveys the slightest nuance of human expression is essential to crossing the uncanny valley,” Epic Games CTO Kim Libreri said in a statement.

“We believe that holistically combining Epic’s Unreal Engine with 3Lateral’s facial rig creation and Cubic Motion’s solving technology is the only way to answer this challenge, and ultimately, to reach the pinnacle of digital human artistry with Unreal Engine,” Libreri added.

Anyway, this is probably not the last acquisition that we hear about as companies gear up for next-generation consoles. So if there are any more big purchases, we’ll let you know!
