Frogger is a video game icon. It is hard to imagine that 30 years have passed since first making an appearance. While the franchise does not have the same stature as the likes of Mario, Sonic or Zelda, this classic series is nonetheless an important arcade title in video game history. We love to celebrate classic franchises on Game Freaks 365, but Frogger 3D begs the question of whether it needed to jump from arcades to a 3D handheld.

Frogger 3D starts off by reminding us of the franchise’s past. You play as the little frog making his way across the street in the original arcade game. While this is a unique way to open up a game, it really does not have any replay value and only acts to remind gamers of their roots.

The rest of the game only has a few main modes to choose from. You have a single-player story mode where Frogger makes his way across 60 stages and multiple locations. This mode includes boss battles that are a different take on the traditional Frogger formula, but it adds little to the game. In fact, these boss fights don’t even feel like Frogger.

I always remember Frogger as a relatively challenging game. It’s certainly true with Frogger 3D where you will have to deal with speedy cars, plowing semi-truck drivers and new gameplay features such as boxes that allow you to jump longer distances. Some challenge is added to an already difficult game by having coins to collect along the road as you make your way to the stage’s goal.

Overall, Frogger 3D is a shallow gaming experience that will leave few satisfied. Hardcore fans of the original arcade classic might get a kick out of it, but the price tag is hardly justified. In the age of $5 games on the AppStore, this should have been a cheap download on eShop, not a full retail release.
