Game Crazy to Close 200 Stores in October

Video game retailer Game Crazy plans on shuttering approximately 200 of its nearly 700 locations nationwide just in time for the holiday shopping season. The video game stores connected to movie rental chain Hollywood Video, which have been deemed as “under-performing”, will likely not remain open beyond the end of October 2009. Discounted merchandise will begin selling next month until the stores close at the month’s end.

Game Crazy’s official statement reads: “Movie Gallery, Inc. is currently operating in an unprecedented consumer/retail environment. In order for us to continue to best serve our millions of customers across North America we’re addressing underperforming stores and ensuring that there is sufficient [return on investment] associated with each of these stores going forward. The vast majority of our stores will be unaffected by these efforts.”
