Game of the Year Tournament 2006 Underway

The Game of the Year Tournament 2006 is now underway. Voting has begun to select this year’s Game of the Year as 64 games face off against each other across virtually every platform. Voting will take place daily with a new match every midnight on the homepage until we have a Game of the Year. Unlike some other sites, we aren’t stuck on our own opinions. We let you, the viewer, decide your own Game of the Year. Today’s match pins #1 seed Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess against #16 seed The Rub Rabbits. Sega will need to pull a rabbit out of a hat to pull this one off.

This tradition is four years old and dates back to when we started Game Freaks 365. The best games from the Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox fought each other in a tournament of 32 games. Super Mario Sunshine came out victorious over Metroid Prime to win the first Game of the Year Tournament. In 2004, we expanded to 64 games with a Final Four showdown between #1 seeds Pandora Tomorrow, Burnout 3, and Half-Life 2, along with #4 seeded Need for Speed Underground 2. The result was a resounding 3-to-1 victory for Half-Life 2 over Pandora Tomorrow. Resident Evil 4 proved unstoppable in 2005 as it only dropped below 70% against an opponent twice: the Final Four and Championship. #1 seeded Resident Evil 4 cruised to a 62% to 38% Game of the Year win over a #4 seeded Mario Kart DS in the Championship.

2006 looks to be as unpredictable as ever, as this year brings the strongest set of titles we have ever seen. The biggest contenders are the #1 seeded Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Gears of War, Final Fantasy XII and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. It would be a mistake to assume that a #1 seed is a lock just yet, as the #2, #3 and #4 seeds are just as qualified to be #1 seeds any other year. They include #2 seeded Okami, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Guitar Hero II and New Super Mario Bros. The #3 seeds pack a punch as well, with Rainbow Six: Vegas, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Kingdom Hearts II and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter.
