Half-Life games are free to play until Alyx launches in March

Half-Life 2

Valve is letting gamers play all of the games in the Half-Life series for free in the leadup to Half-Life: Alyx.

These games are all fairly old now, but they’re still fun to play. The original Half-Life was released back in 1998 while Half-Life 2 came out in 2004. Two years later, Half-Life Episode 1 came out. Episode 2 followed in 2007. A third episode was planned but never released.

Twelve years after the release of Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Valve announced Half-Life: Alyx back in November. They are calling it their “flagship VR title.” Details are still fairly scarce, but the company released Alyx‘s first trailer shortly after the initial announcement.

Half-Life: Alyx is set before the events of Half-Life 2 and the episodes, but the games share characters and story elements,” Valve says. “The Half-Life: Alyx team believes that the best way to enjoy the new game is to play through the old ones, especially Half-Life 2 and the episodes, so we want to make that as easy as possible.”
