Is Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City worth playing in 2023?

Is Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City worth playing in 2023? This game originally received less than impressive reviews from critics and gamers alike. You may be wondering what this game is all about.

Released in 2012, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is a third-person shooter that has both single-player and multiplayer game modes. It was released for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC between the releases of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6. Thanks to backward compatibility, Operation Racoon City is playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It even has FPS Boost on Xbox Series X.

Being a squad-based shooter, it resembles a tactical shooter that’s faster-paced than your usual Resident Evil game. A Class system is also present in the game, allowing you to choose one of six classes.

Is its story canon?

While it had two story campaigns in which you would either play as a member of the Umbrella Security Service team or an operative of a Spec Ops team deployed by Echo Six, the stories are non-canon. Resident Evil games tend to have great narratives and great characters, and it’s not rare for some gamers to dislike non-canon stories.

Reviews

Critics pointed out the heavy flaws regarding the AI and the mission design of this mediocre Resident Evil game, and since its release all the way back in 2012, it still hasn’t managed to garner anything more than mixed reviews on all platforms. Some gamers and reviewers went as far as to say that this is one of the worst Resident Evil games ever. But there is fun to be had with this game with its tight shooting mechanics.

However, despite these poor reviews, it managed to sell very well, with more than 2.1 million copies sold as of June 2012. Commercially, it was a success after all.

The Multiplayer

Many players say that the multiplayer is where you can actually have fun in this game, but there is the case of it being less active than it was back in the day. Nonetheless, there are players who are still looking for matches on PC, and this might be a game for you if you’re really into Resident Evil.

There is a co-op mode where you can join the USS or the Spec Ops team and battle against each other. Multiplayer also features the Heroes Mode along with co-op. In that game mode, you play as Leon, Claire, Jill, Ada, or other popular and heroic Resident Evil characters.

Is it worth playing in 2023?

In my opinion, the single-player mode is only worth playing solely because of the gameplay; the story is best not taken into account as it’s non-canon. Of course, ultimately you are the one who chooses to either enjoy the story or not.

In all honesty, I think there have been many other games that execute this concept well, and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City may not be worth playing nowadays. However, its sales and the select few reviews of gamers that talk about how good the mechanics of the game is and how fun it is, you may buy it and give it a try during a sale at Humble Store or Steam.
