Is the PS4 backwards compatible? In this article, let’s discuss the backwards compatibility of the popular Sony PlayStation 4 console. We’ll also discuss what backward compatibility is in general.

What is Backwards Compatibility?

First of all, let’s understand what backward compatibility is. Basically and simply, it’s the ability for newer console hardware to run previous-gen games. When an operating system of a certain console or device is able to run software that was meant for previous gen hardware, then the operating system is capable of backwards compatibility.

For example, if the PlayStation 4 is able to run games like Red Dead Redemption, which was a PS3 game, then the console is backward compatible.

The PS2 console could run PS1 games. And the original “fat” PS3 could run PS2 and PS1 games. In fact, the original PlayStation 3 model included PS2 hardware inside! So, technically, it is not really emulating a PS2. Thus, the PS2 and the PS3 were backward compatible. Later PS3 models cannot play PS2 games, but they can play PS1 games.

The original PS3 model is backwards compatible.

Let’s get to our original question now. Is the PS4 Backwards Compatible?

The Backwards Compatibility of the PS4

Unfortunately, the PS4 is not capable of running older generation games that were meant for older operating systems of PS3 or PS2. Obviously, the architecture of the PS4 is more advanced and different from that of the PS3 or even older hardware. And that’s the main reason why the older games are not supported by this system. However, PS3 and PS2 had backward compatibility, as I said above.

PlayStation Plus Premium / PlayStation Now

PlayStation Now even allowed you to stream games on PC.

An alternative to complete backward compatibility of the PS4 is PlayStation Plus Premium. Formerly known as PlayStation Now, the streaming service allows you to play (stream, more specifically) hundreds of previous-gen games on your newer systems. The downside is the fact that you have to pay a monthly fee. You cannot just pop in an old game disc.

The Remasters

The Last of Us Remastered is one of the first games that come to mind when discussing PS3 remasters for PS4.

Some PS3 games have received remasters that are able to run on PS4. For example, The Last of Us Remastered, God of War 3 Remastered, and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.

These remasters are made for newer hardware and they look and perform better too. It’s a good way to enjoy your old favorites on newer hardware.
