Japanese Sales: August 15 – August 21, 2005

Sales of the top 100 titles totaled 758,735 units, 73.60% of last week’s total and 97.54% of the weekly average. The total number of units sold this week last year (3rd week of August) was 798,210 units. Two years ago, sales amounted to 505,180 units. Again, to our surprise, Medal of Honor: European Assault remains in the Top 10 from last week.

Four new releases ranked among the top 100 titles. With new titles accounting for only 15.41% of sales, the market like last week continued centered on existing titles. Of last week’s Top 10, Jump Super Stars (Nintendo DS), World Soccer Winning Eleven 9 (PS2), Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness (GCN), DS Training For Adults: Work Your Brain (DS), Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 (PS2), Gentle Brain Exercises (DS), and The King of Beetle Mushiking: Greatest Champion (GBA) all remain.

Hardware’s boost last week from the Nintendo DS’s new colors has waned. Nintendo DS unit sales remain strong, outselling PSP 3-to-1 for the week. The DS made up 50.61% of the hardware market, a moderate 4 percentage point drop from last week, while the PSP made slight improvements to 14.96%.
