Japanese Sales: August 8 – August 14, 2005

I apologize that these numbers weren’t available last week, but as I was in Vancouver, it wouldn’t have been possible for me to get them posted. Sales of the top 100 titles totaled 1,030,933 units, 67.67% of last week’s total and 132.43% of the weekly average. The percentage of the previous week’s total fell due to the absence of new titles comparable to last week’s World Soccer Winning Eleven 9 (PS2). The one surprise this week was Electronic Arts’ Medal of Honor: European Assault cracking the Top 10.

Seven new releases ranked among the top 100 titles, a low number compared to last week’s seventeen making the top 100. The share of sales accounted for by new titles dropped from 70.66% to 31.13%, suggesting that the new titles rush experienced up until last week has also slowed down. Of last week’s Top 10, World Soccer Winning Eleven 9 (PS2), Grandia III (PS2), Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness (GCN), Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 (PS2), Gentle Brain Exercises (DS), and The King of Beetle Mushiking: Greatest Champion (GBA) all remain.

Combined unit sales of the Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, and Nintendo DS accounted for 65.17% of the overall hardware market, a huge spike from last week’s 48.65%.
