Japanese Sales: January 9 – January 15, 2006

As Nintendo struggles to find units to stock store shelves of their mega-popular Nintendo DS, Sony took advantage of the DS shortages for the second straight week as the PlayStation Portable nudged the Nintendo DS by just 3,000 units in Japan. One Xbox 360 title made it into the Top 50 this week, coming in at 13th, but failed to increase the flagging sales of the hardware. Sales of the top 100 titles totaled 998,637 units, representing 48.14% of last week’s total.

The Nintendo DS continues its domination of the software charts with 7 of the 10 slots. The Top 4 from last week remain unchanged, with DS Training for Adults moving up a spot and Mario Kart DS moving down. Returning to the software charts this week are: Brain Training 2 (DS), Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World (DS), DS Training for Adults, Kingdom Hearts 2 (PS2), Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time (DS), Gentle Brain Exercises (DS) and Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop (DS).

The PlayStation 2 remains the best selling console hardware by far, followed by the struggling Xbox 360, which outsold the GCN for the first time in several weeks, yet still sold only 6,107 units, which is fewer than last week.
