Japanese Software Sales – Week Ending Sep 3, 2006

Now that I have found a new source for Japanese
software charts, I will be reporting them weekly once again. Nintendo
has done an amazing thing in Japan where they are just swimming in the
money. In the Top 10 charts this week are four Nintendo DS games that
have sold more than 3 million units overall. Even more impressive is
that Nintendo itself has sold 441,750 software units for the week,
compared to 57,750 for its nearest competitor, almost a monopoly-like
status. Combined, the DS and GBA account for over 80% of the software
market for both handhelds and consoles. The nearest rival is PS2 at
9.2%. Since launching in 2004, the Nintendo DS is now just 1 million
software units shy in Japan of overtaking the Game Boy Advance, which
has been around since 2001.
