Riot Games gave fans new details today and a sneak peek into Empires of the Ascended, the upcoming content expansion for Legends of Runeterra.
Empires of the Ascended will bring 110 new cards to the popular, free-to-play digital collectible card game. The expansion includes nine champions. It also has a new region, Shurima, a vast, mystical, ancient, brutal desert-like land that was once home to the most powerful empire on Runeterra.
Empires of the Ascended design lead Mark Sassenrath had this to say about the new expansion:
We’re super excited for everyone to finally experience the glorious new region, Shurima. For this set, we’ve really tried to go “next level” in cinematic moments, novel mechanics, and big plays. We can’t wait to see what you do with it when it goes live!
Leading up to the March 3 launch, Riot Games is unveiling cards for its largest expansion through its social channels daily. You can catch these reveals on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

The last expansion, Cosmic Creation, launched in December 2020. Riot also announced late last year that the game would feature bi-monthly tournaments. Legends of Runeterra launched last year on Android and iOS devices as a League of Legends spinoff.
