To celebrate the launch of GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch, I am going to play the entire game over the next month. At the moment, I am playing on 00 Agent difficulty, although I may switch to a different difficulty setting in later levels. The videos will not feature any commentary so that you can enjoy the game as if you were playing it yourself. If you haven’t seen our previous videos, we recommend that you watch the beginning of the game.

Let’s Play GoldenEye on Xbox Runway Level

Today, we are focused on the Runway level. This level draws inspiration from the beginning of the film where James Bond infiltrates a Soviet-era chemical weapons laboratory in Arkhangelsk, Russia. In the movie, you escape the facility, hop on a motorcycle, catch a plane as it is leaving the runway, and watch as the facility blows up in the background. It’s one of the best action sequences in the movie.

In the game, the facility is detonated as you are escaping it. However, it does not involve a motorcycle, although there is a surprise waiting for you! So things are mixed up a little bit relative to the movie. The basic story arc is followed pretty faithfully though.

Playing on 00 Agent, the mission objectives are:

  • Find the plane ignition key
  • Destroy heavy gun emplacements
  • Destroy missile battery
  • Escape in plane

In the Xbox version of the game, you can unlock the achievement Fly Away for 20 Gamerscore. All you have to do is complete the Runway level on any difficulty setting.

Tips for the Runway Level

This is the third level involving Arkhangelsk and its chemical weapons lab (Dam, Facility, and Runway). In Runway, Bond is trying to escape the Soviet military research facility that he just blew up. You find yourself at the exit of the facility in the mountains conveniently next to a runway. The whole sequence does not make a ton of sense since you started the game jumping from a dam to get into the facility. You end up exiting the facility at the top of a mountain. I digress!

The first thing that you will want to do is pick up the weapon crate next to you. Upon leaving the facility, head to the end of the hallway and go out of the chute. Take out the guard to your right and note that there is a tank at the end of the building that you will want to hop into in a second.

First, you need to get the plane’s ignition key. Enter the small building next to the facility (it’s to your left upon exiting the building). There are guards in here, so take them all out however you want and then grab the ignition key. Now head back outside and head straight across to the other end of the facility in order to commandeer the tank. This will make your life a lot easier as it does a good job of deflecting enemy fire.

Two of the gun emplacements are at the end of the runway. Their locations are highlighted inside the red circles in the screenshot above. Destroy them with the tank!

Once you get used to the controls, start heading down the runway. There will be guards on each side as well as chasing behind you once you get a certain distance down the runway. Take out the gun emplacement on the left and the missile battery on the right side of the runway. At the end of the runway, there are two more gun emplacements: one on the left and one on the right. Once all of your objectives are complete, just ride the tank up next to the plane and get in.

This is easily the shortest level in the entire game. You can beat it in under two minutes if you are fast enough. Nonetheless, it’s still fun to play. It recreates the scene from the movie relatively well, especially considering it was originally done on the limited Nintendo 64 hardware.
