Madden and Wii Sports Resort Top August Charts as PS3 Nearly Doubles

It was another big month for Electronic Arts as their perennial powerhouse Madden delivered two of the top three spots for the month of August 2009. Madden NFL 2010 sold nearly one million units on Xbox 360, followed by Wii Sports Resort at 754,000 units (packaged with a Wii Motion Plus peripheral) and Madden NFL 2010 for the PS3 at 665,000 units.

What games are not on the list are of equal news value. Activision’s Wolfenstein performed poorly, despite moderately positive reviews. Perhaps as a result of the game’s poor retail performance, Activision laid off 56 developers at their Raven Soft studio.

“With the recent completion of both X-Men Origins: Wolverine, based on the summer blockbuster movie, and Wolfenstein, the next chapter of the famed franchise, Raven Software is slightly reducing its workforce to better reflect the studio’s upcoming slate,” an Activision representative told GameSpot.
