Make way for EA Sports FC: EA drops FIFA name from legendary soccer franchise

EA SPORTS FC

A new chapter is about to start for FIFA and EA Sports.

Since FIFA’s announcement that EA no longer owns the naming rights, it all looked bad for the multi-billion dollar soccer franchise.  Today, EA Sports announced that its leading soccer franchise will now be called EA Sports FC. For those who are not soccer aficionados, the FC stands for “Football Club.”

After almost 30 years of history, the legendary soccer video game franchise called FIFA remains for now. There’s still a year left in the existing contract, so the new name does not kick in until the 2023 version of FIFA… er… EA Sports FC.

The new era of football is here and it’s called EA Sports FC

“Our vision for EA Sports FC is to create the largest and most impactful football club in the world, at the epicenter of football fandom,” said Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson.

“For nearly 30 years, we’ve been building the world’s biggest football community – with hundreds of millions of players, thousands of athlete partners, and hundreds of leagues, federations, and teams. EA Sports FC will be the club for every one of them, and for football fans everywhere,” he adds.

According to Wilson, FC will adopt the entire licensing portfolio of the current FIFA franchise. This includes more than 300 individually licensed partners, more than 19k athletes on 700 teams, 100 stadiums and 30 leagues worldwide. Likewise, EA’s goal is to expand the portfolio in the coming years.

Among the new features of EA Sports FC is the exclusivity of important sports tournaments such as the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and the CONMEBOL Libertadores, among others.

The final chapter of FIFA is yet to come

But don’t worry, all is not lost for the FIFA franchise. Later this year, the last game under the name of this classic franchise will be released. To commemorate this incredible closure, the EA team will launch the biggest FIFA game to date.
