Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 races to retail

Sega’s Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is out today, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.

Tokyo 2020 allows fans to play as their favorite characters from both the Mario and Sonic universes. The character roster includes Mario, Sonic, Luigi, Knuckles, Peach, Amy, Dr. Robotnik, Yoshi, and Tails. More will be announced later.

This year’s version will debut some new events including surfing, skateboarding, karate, and sport climbing. The classic event lineup of gymnastics, swimming, 110m hurdles, soccer, equestrian, and archery are all back as well. It also has hoverboard racing and other “dream” events.

The other two Dream Events are Dream Shooting and Dream Karate. Dream Shooting has you running around a traditional Japanese manor taking aim and shooting at targets. The Dream Karate event has you fighting an opponent and lighting up squares where they fall. Whoever has the most squares light up at the end of the round wins.

In addition, there are a number of classic 2D events that pay homage to 8-bit sports video games. These events include judo, gymnastics, kayaking, and more. All told, there are ten 2D events.
