Square Enix today confirmed that it is releasing the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers game on PS5 and Xbox Series X. It will be available at the launch of the consoles this holiday.
Players who own the current-gen version of the game will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version at no additional cost. This is true regardless if the players are moving from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X.
The games will allow you to move your saves to next-gen. Player profiles and progression will transfer. So you can pick up right where you left off on your PS4 or Xbox One. Pretty neat!
In addition, cross-gen play is supported. So PS5 players will be able to play with their friends on PS4. Meanwhile, Xbox Series X players will be connected with their friends on Xbox One. However, there’s no mention of crossplay between ecosystems at this point.
Marvel’s Avengers launches on September 4.
Marvel’s Avengers is the latest game to support Smart Delivery between Xbox One and Xbox Series X. The fact that the PS4 and PS5 versions will also support a free next-gen upgrade is an added bonus.
Square Enix’s announcement may signal that third-party publishers will aggressively adopt the cross-buy feature in the lead-up to the next-gen launch later this year. If that’s the case, it will smooth the transition for gamers quite a bit.
