Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is playable in 4K at 60 FPS on PS5

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Insomanic Games has confirmed that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is playable in 4K at 60 frames per second.

The upcoming PS5 launch title was first revealed in June during Sony’s next-gen event. Insomniac has since confirmed that Miles Morales is a standalone PS5 game, not an expansion. The company has also revealed the PS5 box art for the game.

In a tweet, the developer said that 4K at 60FPS will be optional as part of a “Performance Mode.” This suggests that PlayStation 5 will have something similar to PS4 Pro. On that system, developers give players the option to either maximize a game’s resolution or frame rate. Some games on PS4 Pro are capable of 4K resolution, which comes at the expense of frame rate.

However, it appears that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales achieves both 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, which is impressive. So it’s not quite clear what developers will sacrifice. Does this mean that things like ray tracing are thrown out the window? Insomniac Games will hopefully clarify that soon.

My Take

If this news is any indication, it looks like one of the main advantages of PlayStation 5 is that developers will have to compromise less with the hardware. That’s true with each new generation of consoles – and it will be true with Xbox Series X as well – but this shows what that means in practical terms.
