Master System and Game Gear Coming to Wii Virtual Console

The Nintendo Wii has become quite popular for its so-called Virtual Console. It is, in fact, an online store not much different from the PlayStation Store or Xbox Live Marketplace. Except one big difference: it has the largest single collection of games of the three major consoles and the only place where you will find games from classic Nintendo systems.

To date, six consoles have been represented on the Virtual Console through the use of emulation. They include three Nintendo consoles (NES, Super Nintendo, and N64), as well as three non-Nintendo systems (Sega’s Genesis, NEC’s TurboGrafx-16 and SNK’s Neo Geo). Add three more Sega systems to the list.

According to IGN, Sega will begin to distribute Master System games on the Wii Virtual Console. If you are not familiar with the system, it was Sega’s 8-bit console from the 1980’s that failed to compete with the NES in North America, but had moderate success in Japan and Europe. I encourage you to check out our Master System section for reviews.

In addition to Master System, Sega plans on supporting its predecessor, the Mark III. Furthermore, the Game Gear will see Virtual Console releases as well. If you are a Sega fan, you should be very happy by now. The first two Master System titles will be Fist of the North Star (600 Wii points) and Fantasy Zone (500 Wii points).
