Colette has won an Oscar for Best Documentary Short at the 93rd Academy Awards. The documentary appeared in Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.

Colette is a documentary from Respawn Entertainment in conjunction with Oculus Studios. Respawn is a studio of Electronic Arts. This achievement is one of the biggest in the industry, making Respawn and EA the first video game company to be nominated and a winner in the same category at the Oscars.

An emotional journey

Colette follows the emotional journey of a 90-year old former French Resistance fighter who travels to Germany for the first time after World War II. Colette Marin-Catherine is one of the last surviving members of the French Resistance.

In the documentary short, she returns to Germany for the first time in 74 years. Colette had declined to enter the country after World War II ended, but that changed when a young history student named Lucie entered her life and persuaded her to visit the concentration camp where the Nazis murdered her brother.

Colette received a festival and theatrical release ahead of the launch of Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, winning numerous awards, including Oscar-qualifying wins at Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and St. Louis International Film Festival. The documentary was also made available to stream through The Guardian late last year.

Colette is directed by Anthony Giacchino and was originally featured in Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, an immersive VR experience that puts the player in the boots of a soldier during World War II. It’s something that’s very characteristic of the Medal of Honor franchise. 

Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is available for the Oculus Rift and Steam VR.
