MediEvil developers compare resurrecting franchise to archaeological project

The makers of the upcoming MediEvil remake sat down recently for a behind-the-scenes video looking at the development of the game on PS4.

Back in 2017, Sony announced a 4K remaster of the 1998 PS1 action-adventure game MediEvil for the PS4. The game has since become a full-blown remake from the developers at Other Ocean Interactive. And now that they are only a few months away from launch, the developers are making the rounds talking about the game.

“I think one of the challenges to resurrecting a game like Medievil, you go back to the original game like we did at the beginning of this, you go back to it and you look at it. You don’t want to deliver an exact replica of that original game. You want to deliver the game that people remember playing,” says Mike Mika, the Chief Creative Officer at Other Ocean Interactive.

“And so what we want to do is instead of going back and recreating that perfectly, we want to recreate what you remember about that game and what you took away from that game,” Mika added.

Jeff Nachbaur, the game’s executive producer, talks about how they have access to the original source code. He says that “we can see in there that they had intents to take the game even further.”

“There are boss battles in there that have states that are not in the final game that they were working on and were commented out, so we can see what their artistic design was or what they were trying to go after,” Nachbaur adds.

For Mike Mika, the process of remaking a 20-year-old game is a bit like an archaeological project.

You’re kind of digging up all this material. You’re talking to the original team. You’re trying to find out exactly what they were thinking, what they were feeling at the time. And you use that as a way to springboard into the new direction you want to take the game, and the presentation, and the feel, and the mechanics.

The MediEvil remake launches on PS4 on October 25 for $29.99. Watch the full behind-the-scenes interview below:
