Nintendo announced that their 3DS handheld has sold 6.68 million units to date. The company says that it hopes the hardware will reach an “installed base that is necessary to create a favorable word-of-mouth cycle” after the holiday season, according to a financial statement. They announced earlier this week that they had posted a $925 million loss for the first half of 2011.
Overall, the news is actually relatively positive. Nintendo 3DS has roughly matched the original Nintendo DS in sales. While the 3DS launched at a slow period in March 2011, the Nintendo DS launched at one of the busiest period of the year in November 2004. Nintendo DS sold 6.65 million units worldwide after seven months on sale. The Nintendo 3DS has managed 30,000 more units than that in the same amount of time.
