There’s no doubt that the Nintendo 3DS finished 2011 strong. After a launch in March that was followed by a long drought, the system has managed to get its act together with major releases ranging from Star Fox 64 3D and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D to Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land.

It’s paying off. Nintendo 3DS sold more than four million units throughout the United States in 2011, putting it well ahead of the 3.4 million sold of the various Nintendo DS systems. In December alone the 3DS managed an impressive 1.2 million. Both Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 went platinum, the first two titles on the system to exceed a million units.
