Nintendo Predicts DS Will Be Top Seller of 2007

Nintendo sent out a press release today reminding consumers that while the Wii may be selling out every where, it’s the Nintendo DS that will top sales charts overall. “More than 6 million Nintendo DS portable video game systems have sold in the United States in 2007 through Nov. 30, according to internal Nintendo of America sales numbers,” the company said.

The month of December, for which numbers will not be available until January, is always the busiest due to the Christmas holiday. “Nintendo DS has increased its sales in the United States every year since it launched in November 2004,” the company added.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, Nintendo beat their previous record of 600,000 GBA systems sold with 650,000 Nintendo DS units selling. That is roughly double what the Wii managed for the same time period. “There’s no letup in sight,” says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Nintendo DS appeals strongly to both core and casual gamers, and its momentum is set to propel us into 2008.”
