PlayStation VR tops 4 million units sold

Sony’s PlayStation VR headset has sold through 4.2 million units worldwide as of March 2019.

First launched in fall 2016, the PSVR headset initially cost consumers $399. The price has since come down considerably, with a brief period over the holidays where the Astro Bot Rescue Mission + Moss Bundle was on sale for just $199. That same bundle is now $249 on Amazon, which is still $150 cheaper than the launch price (and it includes two critically-acclaimed games).

The price cut and growing library of PSVR-supported games are enticing consumers to buy into Sony’s vision of virtual reality. The success of PlayStation VR combined with strong sales of the PS4 – which topped 90 million at the end of 2018 – helped Sony rack up a $2.1 billion profit in the second quarter of last year.

The success of the PlayStation VR sets up the PS5 nicely. Assuming that existing PlayStation VR models are compatiable with PS5, Sony’s next-gen system will be able to take full advantage of a built-in user base of over 4 million VR headsets.
