PlayStation VR2 price announced and it's ridiculously expensive

Start saving your clams if you plan on getting PSVR2.

Sony has officially announced the PlayStation VR2 price, and it is ridiculously expensive – shockingly even. PSVR2 will retail for $549.99 / €599.99 / £529.99 / ¥74,980 at launch in the United States, Europe, United Kingdom, and Japan. If you live in the US, that’s more expensive than a PlayStation 5 console.

The new PlayStation 5 VR headset includes the PSVR2 headset itself (duh), two PS VR2 Sense controllers, and stereo headphones. It does not include an optional PlayStation VR2 Sense controller charging station. That retails for an additional $49.99.

PSVR2 has a 4K OLED display

The PlayStation VR2 is the PS5 successor to the PSVR headset that was released on PlayStation 4. The PSVR2 headset has an OLED display with 4K resolution and HDR, a haptic response system in the headset, eye-movement tracking, and controller movement tracking without the need for an external camera.

Although the price will shock many who paid only $399 for the original PlayStation VR headset at launch, it is more in line with other VR headsets. In fact, the Meta Quest 2 went up in price recently. However, the price of the PSVR fell as low as $199, which allowed it to post sales of over 5 million units. In fact, GameStop has PSVR for $99.99 refurbished.

Of course, launch prices are almost always inflated to take advantage of the hype and early adopters. So if you wait a year or two (or maybe even a few months if PSVR2 doesn’t sell well), the price will likely begin to come down.

How to buy PSVR2

Sony also detailed pre-orders and how PlayStation fans can buy the PSVR2. To combat eBay scalpers, Sony says that they will sell the VR headset directly to consumers through direct.playstation.com.

Here are the full details via the official PlayStation Blog:

During this initial launch phase for our next-gen headset, players in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg will initially be able to pre-order PlayStation VR2 solely through PlayStation’s online store at direct.playstation.com. Pre-orders will begin on November 15, and players may begin to register for pre-orders starting today. Orders from direct.playstation.com for PlayStation VR2 headsets and bundles will ship throughout the week of launch.

In other markets, PlayStation VR2 will be sold at participating retailers, with pre-orders beginning on November 15. Information will be provided through participating local retailers in these regions.
